Where Technology Meets Conservation

We use innovative tools, community partnerships, and scientific research to protect bats and the ecosystems they support.

We develop and apply cutting-edge technology to better understand and protect bat populations. Our tools allow researchers, land managers, and communities to collect data more efficiently and make science-driven conservation decisions.

The Technology We Use

  • Drones for Tracking Bats: Capture real-time movement data and locate roosts safely and efficiently.

  • Bluetooth Cellular Tags (IoT): Monitor bat movements across landscapes and gather high-resolution data on behavior.

  • PIT Tag Readers: Deployed in Ohio and Yellowstone to track long-term population trends and migration patterns that inform conservation planning.

  • Camera traps and Acoustic Monitors: Document seasonal activity, roost selection, and species presence—offering a noninvasive view of bat behavior.

Putting Technology into Practice: Smart Bat Roosts

Through collaborations with partners, we’re building bat condos and redesigned barns that integrate these technologies, creating spaces where people and bats can safely coexist. By combining ecological design with digital monitoring, these smart roosts allow us to better understand how bats use artificial habitats while informing future conservation efforts.
