Protecting Bats and their Habitat

Through partnerships, education, and outreach, we aim to inspire action that benefits both bats and people.

As the only bat research lab in Ohio, we are dedicated to conserving bat populations and the ecosystems they depend on. We collaborate with individuals, landowners, managers, and agencies at local, state, and national levels to develop science-based solutions for protecting imperiled bat species.

Our team works year-round to conduct research, analyze data, and identify best practices for restoring and maintaining vital habitats. By combining field studies with innovative technology—from Bluetooth enabled cellular tags to drone telemetry—we provide the knowledge needed to guide effective conservation strategies.

Individual Giving

Private funding can help facilitate work that may not otherwise be financially supported.

Cluster of Virginia big-eared bats (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus)

$25 can provide outreach and educational materials for events such as Ohio Bat Fest and school programs.

$50 can support a full night of bat field surveys, including field supplies and data collection.

$100 can fund tracking equipment like bluetooth cellular tags and environmental sensors to help locate and protect bat roosts.

$500 can help install a smart bat roost or cover part of its ongoing maintenance to safeguard a maternity colony.

$1,000 can support field staff, enabling extended hands-on research, surveys, and community outreach.

Any amount, big or small, is greatly appreciated.

If interested in contributing, please see our Johnson Ecology and Conservation Fund at the University of Cincinnati Foundation linked below.

Community Partnerships

We collaborate with businesses and community partners who are committed to science-based approaches to bat conservation and coexistence.

Corporate support can help expand research capacity, advance applied solutions to human–bat conflict, and strengthen outreach efforts such as Ohio Bat Fest and educational programming.

Partnership recognition may include:

  • Acknowledgement at public events

  • Recognition in outreach materials

  • Inclusion in annual reports

  • Acknowledgement in publications, where appropriate

  • Recognition on a Supported Initiatives page highlighting how contributions advance specific projects
